    James Brydon

BRYDON, James (Jim)On January 3, 2017, surrounded by family, Lucky Jim Brydon passed away after a brief illness. Jim was predeceased by his three brothers, Stuart (Hilda), Ralph, and Willy (Peggy), and first wife, Vera. Husband to Ruth, Dad to Dianne (Kevin Johnson), Jereleen (Martin Entz) and Frank (Cathy Saunders), Grandpa to Connor and Meghan, Poppa to Jay, stepdad to Trevor (Maria and baby Nathan), brother-in-law to Jean, Joyce, Nellie, Alvina, David and Sharon, and Uncle Jim to many nieces and nephews, Jim's positive outlook and determination in the face of many health challenges was an inspiration to all. Jim was born June 28, 1928, and raised on a farm near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. When asthma precluded his remaining on the farm, Jim was lucky to be mentored by J.C. Woodward, who gave him his first job, encouraged him to attend the University of Manitoba, hired him at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, and encouraged him to pursue his Masters and PhD in Soil Chemistry at the University of Missouri. Jim felt lucky to have a gratifying career. After 25 years at Agriculture Canada, Jim moved to Environment Canada where he worked as Director of the Commercial Chemicals Branch. Upon retirement, he worked in Paris, France, as Director of the Environmental, Health and Safety Division at the OECD. After again retiring in 1993, he continued to consult, despite suffering a stroke in 2000, until he retired again at age 80. Jim was lucky in love; he was happily married to Vera (Warren) for 31 years, raising three children together. After her death, Jim married his angel, Ruth Green, and they enjoyed 32 years of adventure and travel, making many friends around the world. Curling was his passion. He was a charter member of the City View Curling Club, and he was active in the curling community in France. Despite fighting back from a stroke, colon cancer, knee surgery and a spinal injury from a fall, Jim demonstrated amazing determination and a positive spirit. He always called himself lucky, and was happiest when his family was "in his bosom". We are grateful for the care and compassion shown by Dr. Reid and the outstanding nurses of the ICU at Queensway Carleton Hospital, and his many friends and caregivers at Riverpark Place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
