    Monday Open Doubles League

    Last updated: 17-Oct-2025

    DESCRIPTION

For curlers of all experience levels, Monday Open Doubles consists of fixed, two-player open teams. Offering a balance of recreational-to-competitive play across 4 divisions and 3 weekly draws starting at 7:00pm, doubles is a fast-paced game that demands energy and attentiveness of all participants.

This is what makes doubles so fun and interesting! With only two players, everyone has to call their own line, or choose to get up and sweep your own stones. Sweeping alone means switching sides can be a real advantage, and even skips need to be able to judge weight and sweep those stones to the button!

It is a well-rounded game that gets everyone involved in the strategy, is challenging to even the most experienced curlers, while also being an excellent way to develop the skills for those newer to the sport of curling.

Refer to the League Digital Bulletin board for a copy of the schedule, season format, rules, FAQs and other relevant league info.

    LEAGUE SETUP

    League & Game format:

    • 24 teams across 4 divisions.
    • 2 players per team, 1 spare permitted in any game.
    • 4 rounds of play; Each round is 6 weeks (5 weeks for round robin games, and 1 week to accommodate byes/makeup games)
    • Draws at 7:00pm, 8:20pm & 9:40pm
    • Games are maximum 6 ends, played to the buzzer at 65 minutes indicating the last end of play.
    • Rules are the same as those in mixed doubles; 1 stone from each team is positioned at the start of each end, and players opt between throwing stones 1 & 5, or 2, 3 & 4 in that end. “Power Play” option can only be utilized once a game for each team.
    • Etiquette as is applicable to all other leagues. Players are encouraged to be courteous, be helpful and alert, and try your best to be respectful of pace and not delay the game.

Round 1 is a seeding round, all 4 pools will receive the same points as follows:

    • 4 points for a WIN
    • 2 points for a TIE
    • 0 points for a LOSS

During Round 1 only, teams have the option to throw and record a draw-the-button (DTB) at the end of one of their games, to be utilized as a tie-breaker if needed. At the end of Round 1, teams will be seeded into 4 divisions based upon points accumulated.

In Round 2 points will be awarded as follows:

    Divisions A & B

    • 4 points for a WIN
    • 2 points for a TIE
    • 0 points for a LOSS

    Divisions C & D

    • 3 points for a WIN
    • 1.5 points for a TIE
    • 0 points for a LOSS

At the end of Round 2, the top team from each Divisions C & D will be promoted into Divisions A & B respectively, while the bottom team from each Divisions A & B will be demoted into Divisions C & D respectively. In Round 3, points will be awarded the same as in Round 2.

At the end of Round 3, the teams will be ranked by overall points and redistributed in descending order across the 4 divisions; 1-6 Division A, 7-12 Division B, 13-18 Division C, and 19-24 Division D.  In Round 4, points will be awarded the same as in Rounds 2 & 3.

At the conclusion of Round 4, the top team by overall points will be awarded the league trophy. All Monday Doubles teams will be invited to a season-end Pizza Party, with the option to play one last game for fun.

Skips are responsible for recording the win/loss/tie on the CVCC website following conclusion of the game.

    3rd NAMED TEAM MEMBER
Teams may identify a 3rd team member as an alternate once the team has two paid-in-full members. The 3rd team member cannot be named as an alternate on any other Monday Doubles team, and they are permitted to play with a spare in the event that the two paid-in-full members cannot play.

    SPARING
Everyone who has already registered for a league or joined as a "Spare Member" can spare in this league. "Youth Members" must be 14 or older to spare in this league. Teams looking for a spare should refer to the spares list at https://cityviewcurling.ca/index.php/member-s-home/league-information/sub-lists

    BELL RULE

Bell will sound after 65 minutes of play to indicate your last end of play. Do not begin another end after that bell sounds. In Doubles Play, an end is deemed to have started once the positioned stones have been placed.

    FUNDRAISING

Along with other evening leagues, this league uses a 50/50 draw to fund a joint year-end banquet (dinner and prizes) and maintaining league awards. Additional prizes are occasionally purchased through the year.
